An old military adage goes something like this: “You can delegate authority but not responsibility. True leaders understand that.” Ultimately, you are responsible for the energy, commitment, creativity and love that your team applies to the vision and mission of your enterprise. If you want more from your team than they are offering start by looking at yourself and ask yourself, “What does this kind of followership say about my leadership?” Don’t answer the question, just ask it. Answering it too quickly will simply call forth existing mental models that contributed to the issue in the first place. Emotions are the language of leadership and rarely offer clarity in the short run.
