I was delighted to see that in his new book “David and Goliath” Malcolm Gladwell devoted page space to what psychologists call the Five Factor Model of personality. Page 116 of the print version of his book actually lists and briefly summarizes each of the five factors and notes that innovators and revolutionaries tend to have a relatively unique mix: innovators tend to be open, conscientiousness and to some extent disagreeable in that they are willing to take social risks.
In an earlier post on 10-21-13 I introduced the topic of valid and reliable instruments that offer sophisticated appraisals of how we function in important domains of life. Two of these were The Self-Directed Search® (SDS®) and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO PI-R™). The NEO PI-R just happens to be the finest measure of Five Factor Theory in the world, offers a detailed assessment of each of the five domains of normal personality functioning and even provides a Job Profiler and Professional Management Report as an option.
Valid and reliable personality assessment can be an important component of cross-validating self-knowledge against objective measures. It can also be very helpful for start-ups and mature companies in making hiring/placement decisions by weighing candidate’s traits against the qualities needed for success in a given position.
Beginning this month the SDS will be available to the business and consulting community athttp://ceoeffectiveness.com/ , and it is hoped that the NEO PI-R will be available on the site by mid-year 2014. It is one of the ways we hope to elevate the purpose of business.
