Anxiety is about what’s going to happen. Guilt relates to the past and the future. Depression is an expression of disbelief in one’s capacity to cope. These are all conscious expressions of mental models that are accommodations to early feelings of helplessness. These expressions keep us from seeing and hence changing our chronically endured beliefs about ourselves which represent the central issue of our lives. There is a direct relationship between how well you know yourself and how well you get along with others. Genuine self-knowledge is highly correlated with happiness, which is the outside expression of inner peace.
