The consequences of ignoring our internal call to re-discover our true self are not just psychological.
There is no emotional state (including stagnation) that is not mimicked by the immune system. The brain uses the same neurological pathways for social/evaluative threat as it does for physical threat. Since the brain drives behavior to minimize threat, it transfers oxygen and glucose to the amygdalae and away from the pre-frontal cortex whenever it perceives threat, which is frequent. If we do nothing and continue to rely on our self-limiting beliefs, our habits and defenses can result is chronic stress over time. When this pattern goes on too long it eventually “burns out” the brain and the pathway back to the true self is no longer possible. This tendency can be re-wired but it requires that we follow the pathway to our truer self.
