A major basis for immunotherapy is the observation that cells recognized as “self” are in reality “not self”, and are able to fool the immune system into not attacking  them and eliminating them from the body. Analogously, many of us label “self” that which is actually “not self”, fooling the conscious mind into believing that it is possible to actualize the “ideal self” or “false self” at the expense of the “real self” by keeping  important distinctions from the conscious mind. This unseen process is just as damaging to the psychological life as the cellular confusion process is to our biological life. It is incumbent on each of us to recognize our psychological symptoms–anxiety, depression, self-doubt, over or under arousal etc.–as warning signs, alerting us that we are mislabeling things in a way that will eventually cost us real success in life.
