For example, a sadist and a masochist may have a balanced relationship that is quite costly to both. All of us adapt to microcosms of the world by making compromises that create balance but often at too great a cost. These compromises limit our ability to gain fuller functional access to our true potential. It is almost impossible to experience the rapture of being fully alive in that state because it often requires us to “not know” too much of who we truly are. The more of our true self we relegate to the unconscious, the greater the cost associated with our compromises. The less we know ourselves, the more likely we will be unaware of the impact we have on others. The right balance just happens to be the most efficient and effective balance. It is worth pursuing.
